MINDANAO

Energy Development Corporation (EDC) is the world’s largest vertically integrated geothermal energy producer, boasting over 40 years of history and over 1,180 MW of geothermal capacity in its portfolio. EDC has made the Philippines the third largest geothermal energy producer in the world and is an acknowledged leader in wet steam field technology for over four decades.

EDC wanted to increase the efficiency of its already installed steam flash plants on Mindano island by recovering waste heat in the brine and generate additional electricity.

EDC geothermal brine recovery power plant

Customer:
ENERGY DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION (EDC)

Location:
Mindanao island, Philippines

Resource type:
brine from Mindanao I and mindanao II flash power plants

Flow of geothermal brine:
110 kg/s

Brine pressure:
6 bar

Resource temperature
: 140 °c

Reinjection temperature:
80°c

Condensing system:
water cooled condenser, utilizing make-up water from geothermal steam condensed in Mindanao I and II flash power plants

Electrical power:
3,6 MWe

Exergy provided an ORC tailored solution with a single pressure level bottoming cycle equipped with a Radial Outflow Turbine which harnessed heat from the geothermal brine of two flash power plants on Mindanao island to generate 3.6 MWe of additional electricity, before the brine is reinjected into the reservoir. The scope of Exergy’s project involved engineering, design and supply of the ORC system and technical equipment, including the cooling towers and brine acid dosing system. Moreover, Exergy’s task encompasses a substantial technical advisory service to EDC for the project execution.
The overall project had a very tight time schedule, and start-up of the plant was completed in May 2022 in only 12 months. The new ORC installation will enhance the efficiency and productivity of the existing geothermal field without any additional environmental impact. Aside from providing clean and reliable power to the Mindanao grid, the project will also eliminate around 25,000 tons of equivalent carbon dioxide yearly using geothermal energy.
