Heat Pumps for Industrial and District Heating Solutions

Heat pumps are a cost-effective solution for generating both heat and cooling by capturing thermal energy from a low-temperature source, upgrading it to useful heat at higher temperature. As a pioneer in ORC power systems, leveraging its deep knowledge in turbomachinery design, engineering and process integration, Exergy has designed the innovative X-heat industrial heat pump series which include both small and large heat pumps ideal for a wide range of industrial applications and district heat systems.

TRANSFORMING HEAT PRODUCTION WITH INDUSTRIAL HEAT PUMPS

Advantages of Industrial Heat Pumps

Industrial heat pumps are the ideal solution to the growing needs of decarbonizing heat generation in industrial processes and district heating networks. Instead of burning fossil fuels, industrial heat pumps use electricity to move thermal energy, delivering significantly more heat with the same amount of electricity compared to direct electrical heating. Industrial heat pumps contribute to lower operational costs and provide a sustainable and cost-effective energy supply.

Applications and Temperature Range of Exergy X-heat Heat Pump Series

Exergy X-heat industrial heat pump series is available from small- to large-scale applications in the temperature range from conventional (~50°C) to high temperature (>90°C until 150°C):

< 1 MWth for small industries or combined with hot water or hot oil generators
> 1 MWth up to 50 MWth for large industrial processes and district heating

Exergy’s X-heat series can be ideally employed for heat generation in such industries:

Chemical, petrochemical and refinery
Food and beverage
Pulp & Paper and Fiber
IT data centers
Utilities and Power Stations
District heating systems

How a heat pump works

At the core of a large heat pump is a highly efficient thermodynamic cycle. This process transfers heat from a low-temperature source (such as air, water, or geothermal energy) to a higher-temperature destination.

  1. Evaporation: the refrigerant fluid absorbs heat from the heat source, converting to a vapour.
  2. Compression: The refrigerant vapour is compressed, increasing its pressure and temperature.
  3. Condensation: At the condenser the refrigerant releases heat to the heat user
  4. Expansion: The expansion valve expands the refrigerant condensate, reducing its pressure and temperature and return to the evaporator to restart the cycle

Key features of Exergy’s Heat Pump series:

Exergy’s heat pump dual stage cycle configuration

Exergy X-heat industrial heat pump series offer single or dual-stage cycle configurations tailored to the available resource and sink characteristics, ensuring maximum Coefficient of Performance (COP). The dual-stage cycle with a flash tank economizer boosts COP by up to 20% compared to a single stage cycle operating in the same conditions.

With a reputation for delivering innovative ORC technology and extensive know how in thermodynamic cycle design, Exergy new X-heat heat pump series stands out for its quality, efficiency, and sustainability features. Our solutions are designed to meet the specific demands of modern industries, offering reliable performance across a broad range of heat pump applications.
